Vocabulary:  

This week we will work on a special unit on Afton State Park which ends in an optional field trip on Thursday.  I've set up a list of related vocabulary words on ​www.vocabulary.com/.  Log into your account and practice the vocabulary words of the week.

Tundra:
  • Very cold and dry year-round
  • Few plants grow here
  • During the summer, it is daylight 24 hours a day! 
Coniferous forest:
  • Most of the trees in this forest are evergreen; they do not lose their leaves during the winter
  • Can be cold in winter but warm in the summertime
  • Found in northern Minnesota
Deciduous forest:
  • Found through most of North America. This is the most common biome in the twin cities!
  • Most of the trees lose their leaves in the winter
  • Hot in the summer, with large amounts of rain. 
Tropical Rainforest:
  • Found close to the equator.
  • Very wet and very hot year-round
  • Many plants and animals live in this biome
Deserts:
  • Found in areas that are very hot and dry year-round.
  • Plants that grow here can store water for long periods of time
Prairie/grasslands
  • Found in places where there is not enough water for trees to grow. The plants that are most common are grasses.
  • Found in western Minnesota

What is Journey's week?  Students are working on a story that tells a little bit about their lives before and after coming to the United States. Students can submit their stories to Journeys, which is a student magazine in Minnesota.
