Grammar Practice: present continuous

The present continuous tense uses -ing.
Words with -ing are used in many ways! We will practice two uses for the present continuous.
  1. Unfinished actions: What are you doing right now? Right now, I am writing about grammar. Right now, you are reading about grammar. You are also taking an English class, planning for the future, enjoying the weather, and much more.
  2. Temporary situations: You can say, "I am living in..." or "I am working at..." if you think you will move soon or you will change jobs soon. Temporary situations will change soon and you can use the present continuous to talk about them.
Picture
Examples:
  • My parents walk to work.
    • "Walk" is the present simple. It describes what my parents always do, usually do, often do, etc.
  • My parents are walking to work.
    • "Are walking" is the present continuous. It describes what my parents are doing right now. This sentence can answer the question, "Where are your parents?"
SPECIAL NOTE:
The -ing ending is used in many ways. Sometimes it makes a verb similar to a noun:
  • I like swimming.
Sometimes it makes a verb into an adjective:
  • Languages are very interesting.
This week, we are only practicing how to use -ing words in the present continuous verb tense!
